The only survivor after the calamities |
A popular legend explains how the barangay got its name. Long, long, ago a childless couple went out to hunt. They brought with them their pet dog for which they had an exceptional affection. When the couple was out on the hills, the whole region was shaken by a combined force of earthquakes, heavy rains and repeated strikes of fearful lightning. The man and his wife failed to return. The following day through their pet dog came back .The couple relatives and friends wondered what had happened to them. The eager crowded around the animal asking where its masters were. The dog could only answer by barking and wagging its tail.
Another day passed, the couple did not return. Their apprehensive relatives and friends went out to look for them at the foot of the big wooded hill, where they were believed to have gone. To their surprise the hill was no longer there. A small lake was in the place where the hill used to stand. It was concluded that the hill had sunk as a result of the strong tremors. The couple, they believed, must have gone down with the mound. That fate day they called “ pagkaguba sa bungtod ( when the hill was destroyed )”. A simplified term Guba was then given as the name of the place.
The people of Guba mostly simply barrio folks live mostly from farming. They grow the usual crops of corn and vegatables. Mangoes are also its major product. The more enterprising one is poultry raising both for home consumption and for sale in the market. Some works in downtown Cebu.
Guba had contributed to Cebuano’s fight for freedom during the anti-Spanish and World War II. In both wars the Miñoza’s have creditably earned their niches in history.

Alejo Miñoza was one of the fightingiest and wiliest fighters during the anti-Spanish revolution of 1898. He was part of the elite group who decided on important matters concerning the Katipunan like the crucial decision in their meeting in Carreta and San Nicolas on when and how to start hostilities. He assisted Leon Kilat himself on that fateful day of April 3, where they sent the Spanish forces scampering to the loyalist patrol and Lutao, but who hastingly retreated upon seeing his group.
He and Leoncio Eje where the heroes of the bloody battle of Budlaan, where they showed the Spaniards how Filipinos can fight. And as a reward for all these sacrifices, they had the gratification of seeing the Philippine flag raised and El Pardo on December 16, 1898 signalling their long awaited freedom from the oppressive Spanish rule.
Many menfolk of Guba joined the Cebu Guirellas during the World War II. Prominent among them was Leoncio Miñoza. In May 15, 1942, when the Japanes forces took over Cebu and the USAFF in Cebu formally surrendered, its ranking officers were taken by the enemy by capture or surrender but with their patriotism and love of freedom many army officers and man decided to continue the fight as Guirellas. Protacio Tabal by August of the same year had 1,777 men in his list who were willing to fight. He selected leaders among them and one of the chosen was Leoncio Miñoza of Guba.
